Frequently asked questions and answers about leaving a planned gift.
What does it mean to Leave a Legacy?
A charitable gift in your long term financial or estate plans will allow you to support the organizations and institutions you most value far into the future. You will be remembered through the work of the institution, cause or charity.
Must I have an estate in order to leave a gift?
Most people have an estate when they die, even though they may not have a great deal of wealth. It is just another word to describe any property, money or personal belongings that you may have at the time of your death. Anyone can still arrange to leave a charitable gift when he or she passes away.
Why don't more people leave a legacy?
According to the National Committee on Planned Giving, few people of all income levels leave a charitable gift at their deaths...they simply have not considered doing so and no one has suggested it.
Who can help me arrange for a gift?
An attorney, accountant, financial planner, stockbroker, banker or insurance agent can help you make a gift to charity. You can also call the nonprofit organization you are interested in to ask about the ways to leave a legacy.
Can I leave a gift in someone's memory?
Designating a portion of your estate to a charity in recognition of a person who has made a difference in your life is a wonderful way to honor someone's memory. Whether through a scholarship, a gift to a house of worship, endownment or other special way, this kind of memorial gift can be arranged in your Will the same way that you would leave a personal gift from your estate.
